Agroecological Value Addition
Turn what the land gives into what the market needs.
Nakivale grows more than it sells. Bananas, fruits and vegetables often ripen quickly, and during peak harvest periods, high supply can drive prices down and increase the risk of waste or loss. During prolonged dry seasons, however, supply can fall while demand remains high. SHE-Merchandise creates an opportunity for women to turn this challenge into economic value. Through value addition, women can preserve, process, package, and transform locally available resources into products that can remain valuable beyond the harvest season—helping reduce waste, respond to changing market conditions, and keep more of the value within women's hands and communities. Rather than prescribing what women should produce, SHE-Merchandise provides an open space for women to explore their own ideas and innovations. Through hands-on learning, they gain practical skills in agroecological production and value addition, product development, processing, hygiene, quality, packaging, shelf life, costing, and market readiness—moving from locally available resources or an idea to a viable, market-ready product. The goal is to ensure that women are not only producers of raw materials, but also creators and owners of the value that can be generated from them.
